6 апр 1917 г. - Jaffa deportation
Описание:
On April 6, 1917, during World War I, the Ottoman Empire deported approximately 10,000 residents from Jaffa and Tel Aviv, targeting mainly the Jewish population. This forced removal resulted in the displacement of all 8,000 Jewish residents, who were subjected to violence, theft, and severe hardship, leading to the death of about 1,500 individuals. The Muslim residents were later allowed to return, but Jewish residents could not return until the summer of 1918.
The deportations were part of a broader strategy of the Ottoman authorities to control the population amid wartime concerns, which included the expulsion of perceived enemy nationals and a crackdown on potential collaborators. In the preceding years, the Ottomans had made citizenship demands on foreign nationals and had deported Russian Jews residing in Jaffa.
As British forces advanced towards Palestine in early 1917, the Ottomans ordered further evacuations, including the entire population of Gaza. In late March, the commander Djemal Pasha ordered the evacuation of Jaffa residents, applying particularly harsh measures to the Jewish population, in part due to opposition to the Zionist movement.
In response to the crisis, Jewish leaders in Tel Aviv and Jaffa organized a committee to facilitate the safe relocation of deportees to other parts of Palestine, with help from Jewish communities in the Galilee. The deportees faced a harsh winter in 1917-1918, with many dying from exposure and disease. The impact of these events was profound, contributing to lasting distress within the affected communities and influencing subsequent historical narratives of the region.
