1 авг 1834 г. - Hebron massacre

Описание:

The Battle of Hebron and the subsequent 1834 Hebron massacre unfolded in early August 1834, marking a significant event during the Peasants' Revolt in Palestine. Ibrahim Pasha's forces launched an assault on Hebron to quash one of the last strongholds of resistance. Despite heavy street battles, the Egyptian Army emerged victorious, defeating the rebels of Hebron. However, the aftermath was marked by violence and atrocities against both civilians and rebels.

Approximately 500 civilians and rebels were killed during the violence, while the Egyptian Army suffered around 260 casualties. Shockingly, despite assurances from Ibrahim Pasha that the Jewish quarter would be spared, Hebronite Jews were also targeted. Twelve Jews were killed, and the Jewish community of Hebron experienced significant destruction and suffering.

The uprising itself stemmed from grievances against conscription and disarmament measures imposed by Ibrahim Pasha. Peasants formed the core of the insurgency and engaged in extensive plundering and attacks on local minorities, including Jews and Christians. Hebron, in particular, had suffered under conscription policies, leading to resentment among its population.

After the rebels were defeated in other regions, they concentrated their efforts in Hebron, where they made a last stand. However, despite their resistance, they were ultimately overcome by the Egyptian Army's superior firepower. Following the capture of the city, mass killings and rapes were perpetrated by Egyptian troops, further intensifying the tragedy.

The Jewish community, despite not participating in the rebellion, faced targeted violence and atrocities. Despite assurances of protection, they were subjected to brutal attacks, leading to loss of life and widespread devastation. The massacre left a lasting impact on Hebron's Jewish community, with recovery taking years.

Ultimately, the events in Hebron marked a brutal chapter in the Peasants' Revolt, highlighting the indiscriminate nature of violence and the tragic toll it took on both rebels and innocent civilians.
