During the initial year of John Hyrcanus's reign, he confronted a significant threat to Judean sovereignty from the Seleucid Empire. Antiochus VII Sidetes led a campaign into Judea, ravaging the countryside and besieging Jerusalem for a year. To bolster the city's defense, Hyrcanus expelled non-combatant Judeans, leaving them stranded amidst the turmoil of the siege. Facing a humanitarian crisis, he readmitted the displaced residents during the Sukkot festival. With Jerusalem suffering from food shortages, Hyrcanus negotiated a truce with Antiochus.

The terms of the truce were onerous, requiring the payment of three thousand talents of silver to Antiochus, the dismantling of Jerusalem's walls, Judean involvement in the Seleucid war against the Parthians, and a renewed acknowledgment of Seleucid authority. Fulfilling the terms imposed a heavy burden on Hyrcanus, necessitating the looting of David's tomb to gather the required silver.
