1 янв 1739 г. - Stono Rebellion

Описание:

The Stono Rebellion was a revolt in Charleston, South Carolina. In 1740, about 2/3 of the population in South Carolina was Black. Therefore, planters worried about being outnumbered and a potential of violent resistance. Hence, in 1739, the security Act was passed in SC, where all men were required to wear firearms to church. It was passed before the Stono Rebellion, but not put into act yet (the rebellion took place in interim period).
As another background, in 1733 the Spanish controlled Florida offered that every Black person would be granted freedom there if he could make it to St Augustine Florida (and if they converted to Catholicism). This was the perfect starting place for the Stono Rebellion
The Stono Rebellion erupted on the 9th of September 1739 led by the enslaved man Jemmy. He chose Sunday to revolt as to the high chance of success (all planters and families were in church and enslaved worked unsupervised). The protest started with 20 people, they raided a warehouse to get guns and ammo and marched along the Stono River banks (starting in Charleston) carrying banners stating "Liberty". Others joined the group, by night almost 100 Black people were part of it. But only 10 miles south, white colonists came and killed est. 30 rebels (20 whites were killed), others were taken captive and shipped of to Caribbean. It was a moment of clarity for the SC authorities -> never would they let something like this happen again. After the rebellion, slave importations were cut by 90% during the 1740s, encouraging white people from Europe to come to increase the white population in the colony.
