Crafted in the Classic Period circa 711 CE, Stela 16 comes from the ancient Mayan city of Tikal in Guatemala. This enormous stone monument depicts a royal portrait that is thought to be that of Jasaw Chan K'awiil, a well-known Tikal king. The stela is more than six meters tall and has been meticulously carved with hieroglyphic writings that describe the achievements and ancestry of Jasaw Chan K'awiil. The image shows the ruler dressed in royal clothing, signifying his power and relationship with God.
