UN Resolution 181 was an agreement that the UN partition plan should be enacted. 33 countries voted in favour, getting a majority.

The USA was very influential. Because of the rise in Zionism there, the USA supported the partition plan to make a country for the Jews in Israel. Many countries wanted to keep their financial support and aid from the USA, so they also voted in favour.

The USSR was very influential. They wanted the new Jewish state as an ally in the Cold War, so they pressurised Eastern European countries into voting in favour.

Immediately afterwards, a civil war broke out in Palestine between Arabs and Jews.
