- wanted to reform the Church of England (get rid of Catholic influence)
- Big emphasis on PREDESTINATION
- Emphasis on words of scripture rather than papal authority
- Government and religion is deeply connected (ex. must be a member of the church to vote)
- Focus on community, self-reliance, and intellect (American values)
- MAYFLOWER COMPACT, which governs the Plymouth colony, is the first American constitution, est. self-govt. and law for the common good
NEW ENGLAND COLONIES
- Motive for colonization is religious tolerance NOT profits
- More families and women than South/Chesapeake
- Less mingling with Native communities than South/Chesapeake
- Est. towns based around a church, creating more compact settlements than South's sprawling plantations
