Ned was not put in the group that had to go fight for aipan but he was glad of it. After the battle some of his friends came back and told the story. After a long time of fighting on the beach the marines were finally able to move farther into the island and were broken at the sight of it. The people were told such awful things about the Americans that they would go to extreme measures to make sure them and their children weren't captured. "That was the saddest part on Saipan."
