The Battle of Gaza in 312 BC was a pivotal engagement during the Wars of the Diadochi within the Macedonian Empire. It saw Ptolemy I Soter and Seleucus I Nicator invading the Levant from Egypt, confronting Demetrius I of Macedon, son of Antigonus I Monophthalmus. Despite Demetrius's initial advantage in troop disposition, the battle ended decisively in favor of Ptolemy and Seleucus.

Demetrius deployed his forces with elite cavalry on the left, an Antigonid phalanx in the center with war elephants, and cavalry on the right. Ptolemy and Seleucus concentrated their heavy cavalry on the right, with phalanx in the center and cavalry on the left.

The battle commenced with clashes between the cavalry wings, followed by a fierce melee. Demetrius attempted to use his war elephants to demoralize the enemy, but they were neutralized by Ptolemaic archers and javelinmen. Panic ensued among Demetrius's forces, leading to their retreat.

Demetrius suffered significant losses, including all his elephants and thousands of men. He retreated to Tripolis to rebuild his army while Seleucus, having convinced Ptolemy to release him from service, departed to reclaim Babylonia
