Описание:
The Battle of Emmaus occurred approximately in September 165 BC amidst the Maccabean Revolt. It pitted Judean rebels, commanded by Judas Maccabeus, against a Seleucid expedition led by generals Gorgias, Ptolemy the son of Dorymenes, and Nicanor, near the town of Emmaus.
Employing a strategic nighttime march, the Maccabee rebels launched a surprise attack on the Seleucid camp while many of their soldiers were away. The element of surprise proved decisive, leading to a victory for the Maccabees. Following their triumph, the rebels looted the Greek camp, seizing valuables and likely acquiring additional weapons to bolster their cause.
The Battle of Emmaus occurred around September 165 BC during the Maccabean Revolt. King Antiochus IV Epiphanes left for an expedition to the eastern satrapies, leaving Lysias in charge in Antioch. Jerusalem was ruled by Hellenist Jews and High Priest Menelaus, prompting Lysias to dispatch a force, led by Ptolemy son of Dorymenes, to aid the Seleucid-friendly faction and defeat the rebel forces led by Judas Maccabeus. The Seleucids established their base camp at Emmaus, while Judas Maccabeus's camp was in Mizpah. Judas, upon learning of Gorgias's plan to attack his camp, intentionally left and led his forces to Emmaus for a surprise attack. Judas's forces, numbering about 3,000, attacked the unprepared Seleucid camp at dawn, forcing them to retreat southwestward. Gorgias returned to find his camp destroyed and retreated to the coastal plains without engaging in battle. The Maccabees showcased their resilience and tactical prowess, boosting rebel morale and contributing to the eventual independence of the Hasmonean kingdom.
