The siege of Gaza occurred in October of 332 BCE as part of Alexander the Great's conquests, resulting in a victory for Macedon and the end of the 31st Dynasty of Egypt, a satrapy under the Achaemenid Persian Empire.

Utilizing siege engines previously employed at Tyre earlier that year, Alexander's army reached the walls of Gaza. Despite three failed assaults, they eventually stormed and captured the stronghold, held by Batis, the military commander of the fortress. Batis aimed to prevent Alexander from entering Egypt and awaited reinforcement from Persian king Darius III. Situated on an eminence controlling the surrounding area, Gaza was provisioned for a long siege.

During the siege, Alexander identified the weakest point in the southern walls and constructed mounds despite engineers' doubts. The Gazans launched sorties against the siege equipment, injuring Alexander in one encounter. After completing the mounds and using siege equipment from Tyre, the Macedonians breached the walls and entered the city after three attempts. Despite fierce resistance, Gaza fell, and the male population was massacred while women and children were sold into slavery.

Batis, refusing to surrender, met a brutal end at the hands of Alexander, who dragged him alive beneath the city walls until his death. This victory secured Alexander's route to Egypt and eliminated threats from the north, allowing him to proceed with his conquests.
