Описание:
The Battle of Qarqar, fought in 853 BC, was a significant confrontation between the Neo-Assyrian Empire under Emperor Shalmaneser III and an allied army of eleven kings led by Hadadezer of Aram-Damascus and Ahab, king of Israel. This battle, occurring during the Assyrian conquest of Aram, is renowned for its large number of combatants and for being one of the earliest recorded instances of certain peoples, such as the Arabs, in historical records.
Located at the ancient town of Qarqar, the battle saw Shalmaneser III's forces clash with the coalition army led by Hadadezer and Ahab. Shalmaneser's army had been on an annual campaign, encountering resistance from various kingdoms along the way. Upon reaching Qarqar, they faced the united forces of the allied kings.
The coalition army, often symbolized as "Twelve Kings," included forces from various regions, each contributing troops to the battle. Hadadezer, commanding the coalition, had a sizable force at his disposal, including chariots, horsemen, and infantry. Ahab of Israel also sent a contingent of chariots and soldiers to support the coalition.
While Shalmaneser boasts of inflicting significant casualties on the allied army and capturing numerous chariots and horses, the battle's exact outcome remains somewhat ambiguous. Assyrian royal inscriptions tend to exaggerate victories and downplay defeats, making it challenging to determine the battle's true impact. Despite the claims of success, Shalmaneser's subsequent campaigns in the region suggest that the battle did not result in immediate Assyrian domination.
The Battle of Qarqar did not lead to the immediate downfall of the coalition kings, as Hadadezer continued to rule Damascus for several years afterward. Additionally, while Ahab died shortly after the battle, his kingdom persisted. Thus, the battle's long-term consequences were not as decisive as Shalmaneser may have claimed.
