The siege of Jerusalem in 597 BC was conducted by Nebuchadnezzar II, king of the Neo-Babylonian Empire, against the Kingdom of Judah. King Jehoiakim of Judah initially paid tribute to Babylon but later rebelled, aligning with Egypt. In response, Nebuchadnezzar besieged Jerusalem. The city surrendered in March 597 BC, leading to the deportation of King Jeconiah and many prominent citizens to Babylon.

This event marked the beginning of the Babylonian captivity and the Jewish diaspora. Zedekiah, Jeconiah's uncle, was installed as vassal king of Judah. A decade later, Zedekiah rebelled again, resulting in a brutal suppression by Nebuchadnezzar II. In 587 BC, a second siege of Jerusalem led to the city's destruction and the fall of the Kingdom of Judah.

Scholars differ on the exact date of the siege, with some dating it to 597 BC based on the Babylonian Chronicles. Jehoiakim's death during the siege is recorded, and Nebuchadnezzar pillaged the city and its Temple. The deportation of Jeconiah and thousands of Judeans to Babylon occurred before Nisan of 597 BC. The Book of Kings and Jeremiah provide varying accounts of the number of people exiled, with estimates ranging from 3,023 to as many as 30,000 Judeans.
