Background
The dispute arose when King Rehoboam increased taxes, leading to a rebellion and the formation of the Kingdom of Israel under Jeroboam's rule. Despite attempts at reconciliation, border disputes persisted between the two kingdoms, culminating in Abijah's attempt to reunify Israel under Judah's banner after ascending the throne.

Battle
Abijah's army, numbering 400,000, faced Jeroboam's force of 800,000 warriors. Abijah implored Jeroboam to submit peacefully, citing divine favor toward the house of David. However, Jeroboam refused, setting up an ambush to surround Abijah's forces. Despite being outnumbered, Abijah's troops fought bravely, routing Jeroboam's army and claiming victory.

Aftermath
The defeat weakened Jeroboam's threat to Judah, yet failed to achieve reunification. The battle deepened the divide between the kingdoms, setting the stage for centuries of border conflicts until the eventual fall of the Kingdom of Israel to Assyria in 720 BCE.
