The Siege of Lachish in 701 BCE marked a significant event in the Neo-Assyrian Empire's campaign to quell rebellious kingdoms in the Levant, including the Kingdom of Judah. The battle, documented in various sources such as the Hebrew Bible, Assyrian records, and the Lachish relief, highlighted the Assyrian army's prowess against the fortified city of Lachish, the second most important city in Judah.

Several Levantine kingdoms, including Judah, ceased paying taxes to Assyrian King Sennacherib, prompting his campaign to reassert control. After subduing rebels in Philistia, Sennacherib aimed to conquer Judah, encountering Lachish on his route to Jerusalem.

Lachish, a fortified city situated atop a hill, posed a formidable challenge for attackers due to its elevated position and sturdy walls. The Assyrian Army, highly trained and organized, utilized infantry, cavalry, and siege engines. In contrast, the Judean forces, comprising local militias and mercenaries, lacked the Assyrians' professional organization and equipment.

Assyrian forces attacked Lachish from the less steep southern side, engaging in skirmishes with the defenders. Military engineers constructed a ramp near the main gate, facilitating close combat. Despite fierce resistance, the Assyrians breached the walls, leading to the city's capture. After capturing Lachish, the Assyrians subjected its inhabitants to captivity, with many leaders tortured to death. The town was deserted but later resettled.
