Описание:
The Battle of Dathin, which occurred in February 634, was a significant engagement during the Arab–Byzantine Wars between the Rashidun Caliphate and the Byzantine Empire. The battle is renowned in the literature of the period for its outcome.
The conflict unfolded after a series of Arab raids in the vicinity of Gaza, prompting the Byzantine commander Sergius to gather a small detachment of troops due to a shortage of soldiers. He led this mounted army from his base at Caesarea towards Gaza, approximately 125 kilometers to the south, to confront a numerically superior Arab force led by 'Amr ibn al-'As.
The opposing armies clashed near the village of Dathin on February 4. Despite their smaller numbers, the Arab forces emerged victorious, resulting in the death of Sergius and around 300 of his soldiers. Additionally, approximately 4,000 civilians lost their lives in the battle.
The Muslim victory at Dathin was notable for its impact on the local Jewish population, as recorded in the near-contemporary account Doctrina Jacobi nuper baptizati. The Jewish community, previously persecuted within the Roman Empire, celebrated the Muslim triumph.
