St. Benedict Of Nursia outlines his ideals for the function and role of a monastery, outlining ideals of "work and worship" and establishing a strict schedule of worship spread throughout the day as part of "the Office"

Monasteries that followed his rule were often highly successful and came to be known as ""Benedictine monasteries." As part of the work of monks, transcription and music became jobs of focus, and the monks work was used to accrue wealth and power for the monasteries, in turn helping them grow.
