Indian camp set up at Sand Creek after an agreement was reached and Black Kettle believed his tribe was under army protection. The areas governor was determined to 'kill and destroy' hostile Indians and appointed a war hero to do it.

Chivington led 700 cavalry troops on a dawn raid of the camp (which put up a white flag of surrender) and massacred over 130 people, scalping their victims and taking body parts as trophies.

Black Kettle escaped and carried news of the massacre to other tribes. Native Americans retaliated by attacking forts and killing white settlers.

A new treaty was agreed in 1865 as government couldn't send in troops because of the pressure from the Civil War. Gave two tribes a large reservation and would make generous payments to survivors of the massacre (government backed out after the Civil War).
