WHEN JOHNNY DEPP and Amber Heard abruply settled their divorce in January 2017, after almost eight months of public acrimony and allegations of domestic abuse, few believed it would actually spell the end of the difficulties between them.

And, as expected, the saga exploded again last week, when Johnny, 55, sued Amber, 32, for $50 million and accused her of defamation. Johnny apparently filed the case after Amber wrote a piece for The Washington Post last December, in which she detailed the backlash she has received after speaking out about domestic violence. His lawyers claim the article has led to him losing out on film roles, despite her not naming him.

Amber is said to have been left shaken by the latest round of legal action. 'The stress and anxiety that this is causing her is unbearable, said a second source.

'Just when she thinks the nightmare might be over, she's dealt another blow from Johnny's legal team.

There's no way she could ever survive being sued for $50 million. (Amber is said to be worth $9 million.)

According to the insider, the actress has been left 'genuinely frightened that this could be the undoing of her career.

When she first made the allegations against Johnny, Amber found herself dropped from films and fashion campaigns. Doors quickly shut in her face and it took her time to get her foot back in the door in Hollywood. She's not sure she can go through all that again.

In the fresh lawsuit, Johnny alleges that it was Amber who was abusive (he states that he had to have his finger surgically re-attached after she threw a vodka bottle at him) and claimed to have evidence from four separate witnesses proving that her accusations of domestic violence are untrue. He also accuses her of being unfaithful just one month into their marriage, with her former boyfriend, Elon Musk. (The Tesla billionaire's spokesperson denied this, stating that the couple only started seeing each other after Amber's split from Johnny, in May 2016).

In a statement, Amber's lawyer described the move as 'the latest of Johnny Depp's repeated efforts to silence Amber' and claimed it showed 'he is unable to accept the truth of his ongoing domestic abusive behaviour.

So why, two years after the pair agreed not to speak publicly about their relationship (the settlement also saw Johnny pay Amber $7 million, which she donated to charity), won't their bitter split go away?

'Johnny's friends say this has become a personal crusade for him, said a second source. 'He wants to defend his reputation.
Johnny is willing to spend every last dollar in legal fees. It'sa "fight to the death" scenario as far as he's concerned.

'For her part, Amber is determined to hit back and has declared to friends that she won't be silenced. But she fears this is a move not only to silence her - but to bury her.
