After Napoleon's failure to invade Russia and the devastating losses of his retreat, the Quadruple Alliance forced him into an abdication of his throne. They banished him to the island of Elba, off the Italian coast, for him to rule as his own tiny state. He was able to keep his title and France paid him a yearly income. However, Napoleon heard of political unrest in France and was unhappy with his current situation. He escaped from Elba and made a return to Paris to try and regain control.
