After the failing of the Continental System, France was struggling economically. Napoleon looked for a scapegoat, and found one in Russia, who had failed to comply with the Continental System. Napoleon began his invasion of Russia with around 600,000 men. He began his march towards Moscow intending to stop for the winter in Smolensk, but took a risk and instead marched on to Moscow. The resulting battle was a draw, and the Russians evacuated Moscow, leaving it burned and abandoned. After waiting fruitlessly for the Russians to negotiate, Napoleon ordered a retreat. This retreat led to 370,000 men dead and another 200,000 as prisoners. It was one of the greatest military disasters in history and ultimately led to Napoleon's defeat. He was left with no army and no defense, and Austria, Prussia, Great Britain, and Russia joined forces in the Quadruple Alliance to defeat him. He was forced to abdicate his throne and the Quadruple Alliance banished him to the island of Elba.
