Swiss-born psychiatrist who played a significant role in the development of American psychiatry and clinical psychology during the early to mid-20th century. Adolf Meyer received his medical degree from the University of Zurich in 1892. Meyer became a prominent figure at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where he served as the director of the Henry Phipps Psychiatric Clinic. Meyer introduced the concept of psychobiography, an approach that involves studying an individual's life history to understand the development and manifestation of mental disorders. His approach was more patient-centered and individualized when diagnosing and treating mental disorders (Meyer, 1925).
