He began practicing mesmerism in the 1830s and gained a reputation for his work as a healer. He believed that illnesses often had mental and emotional roots and that individuals could be healed through changes in their beliefs and thought patterns. He contributed to the emergence of New Thought, a spiritual and philosophical movement that emphasized the power of positive thinking and the influence of the mind on health (Quimby, 1888 ; Caplan, 2001; VanMattson, 2023, Lecure 6).
