Despite the split of the Roman Empire, the East Roman Empire, or the Byzantine Empire, stood up to more than 1000 years after the split. It wasn't until 1453, when the Ottoman Empire invaded Constantinople, ending the Byzantine Empire. The last emperor of the Byzantine Empire was Constantine XI Palaiologos.
