After the Crimean War, the Ottoman Empire became heavily dependent on foreign loans. This led to them granting many rights and freedoms to Europeans, such as extraterritoriality. Extraterritoriality means that foreigners that come to the Ottoman Empire are exempt for the local laws and are instead under the laws of the country they are from.
