The robot, developed by a team of engineers at the Stanford Research Institute, was dubbed Shakey due to its erratic movement, but what set it apart was the inclusion of cutting-edge artificial intelligence. Shakey could achieve whatever task you set it, like moving a box across the floor or traversing a room, by taking in its surroundings, making a plan, and carrying it out. Shakey would collect information using sensors such as a TV camera, a range finder, and touch-sensitive metal whiskers to create a representation of its surroundings. A "planning" program would then be used to determine Shakey's next course of action.
