The fugitive slave act is law passed by the 31st United State congress on September 18, 1850. It required any run away, or fugitive, slaves to be returned back to their owner. It was apart of the Compromise of 1850. It was signed by President Fillmore. It is considered the most controversial part of the Compromise of 1850 because it allowed the people to seize slaves without the process of law. The United States stands on the foundation of equality for all, but the created more legislation to remove rights from a minority group. This, in return, raised the black activist efforts to gain equality among the races, because it was the whites benefiting themselves by taking away the slaves rights. It was a step back in the efforts. It showed the the government was endorsing slavery, and set it up for continuing for a significant period of time. It increased the action of the Underground Railroad to get fugitives to Canada.
