The origins of the Internet are rooted in the Cold War tensions between North America and the Soviet Union of the 1950s. Several key people contributed from that time to advances in linking computers and sharing information across networks.

In March 1989, Tim Berners-Lee, a British computer scientist, laid out his vision for what would become the World Wide Web. By October 1990, he'd written the three fundamental technologies that remain the foundation of today’s Web: HTML, URL & HTTP.

On April 30, 1993, the Internet and the WWW became available to general public.
