For the first time since the end of the Cold war, a nuclear powered major political force engaged in a non-proxy war, as Russia declared war for it's disputed territorial claims in Crimea and Donbass.

Please be aware that the Russo-Ukrainian war is far from the only war taking place around this period in human history, this timeline is just focused on wars with far-reaching global consequences that greatly effect the entire world, not just the war's belligerents. Proxy wars such as Afghanistan, Iran, Syria, and Niger are not brought up due to them having relatively minimal global consequences compared to other contemporary conflicts.
