NATO was a North Atlantic Treaty Organization whose goal is to provide security against Soviet Union at the time. The founding members of Nato are Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, the United Kingdom and the United States. They served to secure peace in Europe and promote cooperation as well as guarding freedom. NATO countered the threats posed by the Soviet Union at the time.
