Specifically in the U.S., Children were required to participate in physical education during primary school. This was solely due to the fact of making sure children were in excellent condition (physically) in case they had to be deployed out to go fight in World War 1. “Healthy children were essential to the survival of the nation.” The youngest they sent men out were ages 16.
