Paul wrote this letter at the end of his three-year ministry in Ephesus (see Acts 19:10). It was co-authored with Sosthenes, a synagogue ruler from Corinth.

Paul had previously written a letter to the church in Corinth (see 1 Corinthians 5:9), but that has since been lost.
