The EEC is an economic union founded by France, Germany, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg. It was created through the treaty of Rome.

Britain support the EEC but did not initially attempt to become a member. This was due to many reasons such as few politicians willing to take the leadership and more interest in maintaining a 'special relationship' with the United States.

However, Britain still wanted a free trade area. But, France was annoyed at Britain for abandoning the Suez expedition and so did not invite Britain as a member of the EEC. This broke Britains hopes of the EEC being apart of a free trade area.
