25 окт 1993 г. - Jean Augustine accepted to parliament
Описание:
On October 25th of 1993, Jean Augustine became the first Black woman to be elected as a member of parliament. She was elected for the Etobicoke-Lakeshore constituency, Ontario, and was reelected multiple times, also becoming the first Black woman in Cabinet as a Cabinet minister. Jean Augustine was able to come to Canada because of the domestic scheme of 1955, so she was initially a nanny and was an indentured labourer. After completing her contract she became a teacher, and she was also an activist for women’s rights and immigrant rights. Jean Augustine helped improve the human rights for Black Canadians by spreading awareness on rights for Black people and women, and by making February Black History month. This helped Black Canadians get more recognition, and helped implement more education on the Black community in Canada and their contributions.
