Karl Hillig performs chemical and genetic variation studies on Cannabis. Hillig discovered that there appear to be distinct chemical differences between wide leaflet and narrow leaflet drug type varieties of Cannabis.

Hillig discovers evidence of two distinct gene pools among Cannabis varieties. One gene pool includes all drug type varieties of Cannabis as well as many hemp varieties of Cannabis. The second gene pool consists of certain European and Central Asian hemp varieties.

Hillig suggests that Cannabis be separated into seven different biotypes among three species with six subspecies.
