16 окт 1919 г. - White Sox players are banned
Описание:
This ban happened from the conspiracy that the White Sox was throwing the World Series. This lead to them being called the Black Sox. The scheme to throw the game for money may have first materialized a few weeks before that year's World Series, when White Sox first baseman C. Arnold “Chick” Gandil and a gambler named Joseph “Sport” Sullivan met to discuss the possibility of Sox players deliberately tanking in the championship. Gamblers had long been greasing the palms of disgruntled, underpaid ballplayers in exchange for inside tips, but attempting to rig an entire World Series was a rare and perhaps even unprecedented proposition. When they agreed to this they got three men.He soon enlisted White Sox pitchers Eddie Cicotte and Claude “Lefty” Williams, shortstop Charles “Swede” Risberg and outfielder Oscar “Happy” Felsch into the scheme. Other players were part of it but dropped out. After being down many games to the Reds in the series they finally pulled out of the scandel and came back to almost win the series but did not. After many trials they were found guilty on all accounts. The 1919 World Series was the last World Series to take place without a Commissioner of Baseball in place. This is very important because it has helped change the game for the better.
