1 янв 1863 г. - The Emancipation Proclamation is Issued
Описание:
The Emancipation Proclamation proclaimed that all people who were slaves in rebellious states “are, and henceforth shall be free.” Even though this may sound very broad, the Emancipation Proclamation was very limited. The reason for this limitation is due to the proclamation only applying to states that had seceded from the United States. The proclamation had a tremendous impact on the public but freed very few slaves. This is because the slaves Lincoln intended to liberate were far from Union territory, making the law hard to enforce. The reason Lincoln was only able to free slaves in the Confederacy was due to the rules of the Constitution. Because the liberation of slaves would weaken the Confederacy, the proclamation was seen as military action. The Emancipation Proclamation also gave African American men willing to fight “will be received into the armed service of the United States.” By the end of the war, about 180,000 African American soldiers wore the Union’s blue uniforms. Even though the proclamation gave the African American soldiers the ability to fight in the war, they had to serve in segregated regiments. Needless to say, the Emancipation Proclamation had a huge impact on the war and the future of the United States of America.
