Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination in 1968 was one of the most terrible events in American history. Some white supremacist groups were happy with the assassination on one end of the political spectrum. On the other end of the spectrum, many civil rights leaders and activists viewed King's murder as proof of America's consistent bigotry and brutality. They used his death to call for more changes and for the government to address the underlying factors that lead to racial inequity and violence.
