Charles “Evasive” Hughes = nickname bc Hughes gave different answers about going to war to different audiences. He took both sides, pandered to the audience.

Wilson’s slogan = “Vote Wilson. He kept us out of war.” Makes no promise about the future.

Wilson wins the election then (shortly after) goes to war.
