2. Economic Expansion; US wants a larger market to sell goods.
3. Moral Obligation; US believes that it is their obligation to “uplift” “developing countries.”
4. Domestic Politics; exercising power in Latin American makes a president more popular.
- When a president wants re-election (which is like always), they send troops to Latin America.
5. Elite Preservation; Latin American leaders figured out that being allies with the US is beneficial to them. They would tell the US that rebellions in their countries were communist rebellions (even if they were not). Latin Amer. dictators did this a ton. When they were losing power, they would call the US.
