The Black Hills were considered holy to the Sioux Native Americans. However, gold was found there and many Americans came running.

Colonel Custer was tasked to get Sioux out of the area so that it was safe to look for gold.

Battle of Little Bighorn: Custer (overconfident and racist) blindly charged into battle with only a couple of hundred men. He decided not to wait for backup. He didn’t realize that it was 10 to 1 odds.

The end of the battle was called Custer’s Last Stand, 1876. 264 Americans vs 2500 Sioux.

Many Americans were pissed about losing (nationalism was high bc it was the 100th anniversary of independence). Many used this battle as a justification to attack and control any native group. The Sioux move to Canada to avoid revenge.
