After France, UK and the US combined their zones in Berlin together to form "bizonia" and also created a new currency for it.
-West berlins strong capitalist economy embarrassed the USSR and made communism look weak
-As a result Stalin decided to blockade west berlins borders from the outside world to try and force them to withdraw from west berlin.
-this blockade made a shortage of food and resources in west berlin, it also meant that travel from west berlin was severely restricted.
-However the west refused to give up its territory, this would have given the USSR an upper hand.
-As a result the West flew supplies into west berlin, this is known as the Berlin airlift and lasted for 318 days, by 149, 8000 tons of supplied were being flown in everyday.
Exports were also flown out of berlin, which allowed trade to continue.
-Life was still tough in west berlin, electricity and food were rationed and because of a shortage of coal people struggled to heat their homes, especially in winter.
-Stalin ended up withdrawing the blockage as it became clear the west are not giving up.
-This resulted in a huge propaganda victory over the USSR for the US, also gained respect from many Germans, who view the US as a defender and not just an occupying force.
-Germay remained divided as no agreement was come to, so West and East Germany were formed.
