In the reconstruction era:

It was founded by Nathan Bedford Forrest. It was a white supremacy group, aimed to reverse advances in civil rights and reconstruction policies. It used violence to create fear and get attention. Multiple black people and civil rights activists were killed by the Klan. The Force Acts of 1870 and 1871 were meant to stop these murders; it gave the military permission to engage w/ the Klan; as a result the Klan went underground until resurfacing in the 1920s.
