13 янв 1848 г. - Seneca Falls

Описание:

This was the first women's rights convention in the United States. It was mainly organized by women, Elizabeth Cady Stanton being one of them.

Around 300 people showed up to discuss women’s rights. They produced the Declaration of Sentiments which described women’s grievances and demands. Mostly written by Stanton, it showed that women desired to fight for their social, civil and religious rights. The declaration was inspired by the Declaration of Independence. It states “we hold these truths to be self-evident; that all men and women are created equal.”

At the time, women didn’t have the right to vote and they were forced to submit to laws to which they did not consent. They were also denied an education and had an inferior role in the church. They were required to be obedient to their husbands and could not own property, or the wages they earned. They could legally be beaten. They received unequal rights upon divorce.

At the Seneca Falls Convention, women demanded that these inequalities be stopped.

The convention gained much publicity and got many talking about the issue. More conventions followed for the movement. Reformers frequently referred to the Declaration of Sentiments as they campaigned for women’s rights. Women received the right to vote about 70 years later.
