As a Mexican territory, Americans were invited to settle in Texas and contribute to Mexico's economy. However, many settlers brought Protestantism and slaves which caused tension w/ Catholic and abolitionist Mexico. The Mexican gov eventually mandated conversion to Catholicism and outlawed settlers bringing slaves; many settlers ignored this and war followed.

Mexico sends 2000 troops led by Santa Anna to fight about 200 rebels. The rebels last 13 days (occupying the Alamo fort) then most are killed.

This angers many settlers in Texas and a larger rebel group formed. "remember the alamo" = rallying cry.

Eventually the rebels captured Santa Anna and forces him to give Texas independence
