The Gulf of Tonkin Incident is said to have been the reason the United States finally entered the war. A North Vietnamese patrol boat allegedly opened fire on her USS Maddox. However, to this day we don't know if that actually happened. They were not fired, according to various sources. That is also why the United States chose to attack rather than defend. This incident led to the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution. This gave the President full powers to take necessary measures in Vietnam. This gave him various wartime powers he didn't have before, allowing the president to do whatever he wanted to "protect" the United States. This is important because it gave the president too much power, resulting in devastating wars and tens of thousands of deaths.
