25 дек 1521 г. - First American Slave Revolt
Описание:
The 1521 Santo Domingo Slave Revolt is the earliest recorded slave rebellion in the Americas.
The rebellion was initiated by African slave workers at a sugar plantation owned by Diego Columbus, the eldest son of Christopher Columbus and governor of Hispaniola at the time.
Seen by some colonists as an attempt to take over control of the island colony, it provoked an immediate mobilization of Spanish military cavalry, who managed to crush the ill-equipped Black rebels fairly quickly.
Just days after the rebellion, the colonial authorities introduced legislation to prevent another uprising. Further restricting the rights of Black people on Hispaniola, the set of laws is thought to be the earliest surviving legislation created to control enslaved Africans in the New World.
Nonetheless, rebellions and individual acts of resistance accompanied the system of slavery wherever it sprawled, unbroken by the ever-tightening constraints placed on the enslaved.
