Truman asked Stalin to enter WW2 against Japan, they agree to partition Korea at the 38th parallel
possible reasons for this:
- ending war with Japan quickly
- keep Stalin from taking all of Korea
- continuing American policy regarding Korea of keeping it evenly split between foreign powers
