Chicano Park was created to make space for the community in Barrio Logan and Logan Heights to come together after being bisected by the Coronado Bridge. Mario Solis, a San Diego Community College student and a Brown Beret, saw when there were bulldozers next to the empty lot. He asked why there were bulldozers and learned that they were going to build a highway patrol station. He went around the community, and organized people to fight against having a police station placed under the bridge. The whole community gathered, from children to elders. The occupation lasted about two weeks, until the city complied with the community to make the space Chicano Park.
