The Compromise of 1850 recognized California as a free state, allowed the people of New Mexico and Utah to vote on whether they would become free or slave states, and strengthened the Fugitive Slave Act. Because California became a free state, the country was divided in favor of the North, and the issue around the Fugitive Slave Act further separated the North and South.
